Exporting Digital Books:  best practices

Recognizing that digitization and the sale of digital books is crucial to the future of book publishing in Canada, Livres Canada Books is working to produce a best practices guide for exporting Canadian publishers on the subject of digital books.  In export, new technologies are rapidly changing the way publishers distribute books, sell rights and deliver content.

Our upcoming best practices guide will examine key export markets that are important to Canadian publishers, and where there are significant digital sales.  Our research will provide insight into the mechanisms for buying and selling digital content, as well as specific standards, formats and devices used in relevant markets.  We will also provide information about new and emerging markets that show potential for Canadian publishers in their export activities.

The choices that exist to maintain, sell or license rights can be particularly challenging, and sometimes difficult to navigate, in relation to digital books.  In addition to market intelligence, Livres Canada Books will present various options available to Canadian publishers in the negotiation of international rights, making recommendations about digital formats and rights strategy where needed.

This guide, and the accompanying annex of resources for Canadian publishers exporting digital books, will serve as a ‘one-stop’ resource and allow Canadian publishers to maximize their opportunity for digital book sales in international markets.

The Livres Canada Books guide to best practices for exporting Canadian publishers will be available on our website in early 2011.  Stay tuned.
