Will Atkinson

Will Atkinson

Will Atkinson spent nine years working for UK book retailer Waterstones, opening and managing stores. In 1994 he switched to publishing and took up the role of paperback product manager for Faber. He has since held a number of sales and marketing roles at Faber and is now director of Sales and Marketing.

Will won a British Book Award for sales person of the year in 2004 and for industry achievement in 2008. He sits at the centre of the Independent Alliance, a group of eight independent companies for which Faber provides sales infrastructure. He sits on the board of the Independent Publishers Guild and was its chair in 2008/9.

Marc Boutet

Marc Boutet
President, De Marque
Marc Boutet is a Canadian entrepreneur. He is the cofounder and president of De Marque, a leading Canadian eBook and digital content distributor. Marc holds a degree in Computer Science from Laval University. He has been a member of various boards, including CANARIE (Canada’s Advanced Research and Innovation Network), National Library and Archives of Quebec, and the Canadian Youth Business Foundation. Marc strongly believes that books by Canadian authors should be be widely and easily available on the Web with a single click without having to deal with multiple companies and technologies. The publishing industry collectively will benefit by having more people involved in eBooks over the long term.

Beth Bruder

Beth Bruder
Vice-President, Sales and Marketing, Dundurn Group
Beth Bruder is vice-president of Dundurn Press, a Canadian press founded in 1972 publishing over 100 titles each year. Dundurn is a leader in the management and sales of eBooks and related metadata with over 1,500 titles for sale across several platforms.

Beth has over twenty-five years of experience in sales, marketing, and publishing in the book industry, including setting up an early childhood education publishing and sales division at Addison-Wesley and managing their trade division. She also managed the sales, marketing and publishing programs at John Wiley & Sons Canada as vice-president of the Professional, Reference, and Trade Division there.

Beth is active in numerous Canadian publishing industry initiatives and currently is vice-chair of BookNet Canada and chair of the Association of Canadian Publishers’ Canadian Bookshelf committee tasked with creating a unique website that will make information on Canadian-authored titles accessible to the world.

Philip Cercone

Philip Cercone
Executive Director, McGill-Queen’s University Press
Philip Cercone did graduate work in American colonial history and from 1976 to 1985 was director of the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences’ Aid to Scholarly Publications Program in Ottawa, which subsidizes Canadian publishers. In 1985, he took up an academic appointment at McGill University as executive director and senior editor of McGill-Queen&rsquuo;s University Press. Philip sits on the board of directors of the Press and is chair of its publications review committee. As well, he edits the Press’s distinguished History of Ideas series.

Philip has been the president of the Association of Canadian Publishers (twice); the Association for the Export of Canadian Books (5 times); the Association of Canadian University Presses (twice); the Association of Quebec University Presses (twice); the Association of English Language Publishers of Quebec; and the Italian Canadian Professional and Businessmen Association of Canada. For the past three years he was involved with the founding of eBOUND Canada, a not-for-profit organization with the purpose of advancing Canadian publishers’ digital engagement, on whose Board he now sits. In 2010 Philip received the Association of Canadian Publishers President’s Award “for leadership through volunteer service to the publishing industry and ACP.”

François Charette

François Charette
Executive Director, Livres Canada Books
An active member of the publishing community for nearly fifteen years, François Charette is the executive director of Livres Canada Books (formerly the Association for the Export of Canadian Books), a position he has held for almost three years. François was also programs manager and manager of the Canada Stand at Livres Canada Books for five years.

François has also spearheaded several projects for the Literacy Foundation and has served as coordinator for the Association québécoise des Salons du Livre for nearly two years. He began his career in the industry as publicist at Éditions de la courte échelle.

Dan Franklin

Dan Franklin
Digital Editor, Random House Group
Dan Franklin is digital editor at the Random House Group where he is responsible for direct-to-digital commissioning, cross-group digital publishing initiatives, and is consultant to the publishing divisions on various digital projects. He was previously digital editor at independent publisher Canongate Books where he oversaw its digital and audio program, and had his own list of titles.

Guy Frenette

Guy Frenette, Moderator

A graduate of the École des Hautes Études Commerciales in business administration, Guy Frenette has devoted his career to SME management in the publishing and printing sectors.

He joined the family firm, Librairie Beauchemin in 1968, and then worked in printing, public relations and publishing from 1977 to 1985. He returned to the family business as president in 1985 and became proprietor in 1986. Under his leadership, Groupe Beauchemin Éditeur grew as an educational publisher by opening up new markets, developing new product lines, and introducing new technologies for online learning in primary schools.

Since selling the business to Chenelière Éducation in 2005, Guy has been involved in developing SMEs in the traditional and electronic publishing industries and the printing sector. He serves on a number of boards and is a partner in two Quebec publishing houses. Throughout his career he has played an active role in professional associations related to publishing (namely, the Association nationale des éditeurs de livres and the Association for the Export of Canadian Books) and non-profit organizations. He currently chairs the Board of Directors of Livres Canada Books.

Noah Genner

Noah Genner

Noah Genner has an extensive background in independent bookselling, software and business development. As the leader of BookNet Canada he orchestrates a skilled team of technical, policy oriented and client focused staff to provide new data management services and supply-chain initiatives to the Canadian publishing and book retail sectors.

Before working at BookNet Canada, Noah ran his own technology and software development consulting business, servicing a wide range of clients including book publishers and printers. Prior to that, Noah was director of Software Development for consumer market research leader Compusense where he oversaw the development of a variety of software projects used by numerous Fortune 500 companies worldwide.

Noah serves on the Board of Directors of the Book Industry Study Group and is Chair of the ONIX International Steering Committee.

Scott McIntyre

Scott McIntyre

Scott McIntyre is D&M Publishers’ founding partner, current chairman, and publisher of the Douglas & McIntyre imprint. Scott entered publishing in 1967. He has been actively involved in government relations and industry association work over forty years, including leading trade missions to Japan and the Netherlands. For twenty years he was involved with Canada’s international trade negotiations as a member, including a term as chair, of the Cultural Industries Sectoral Advisory Group on International Trade (SAGIT). During this time he was influential in the development and implementation of the UNESCO Convention on Cultural Diversity.

Scott has served on numerous boards, foundations, and committees throughout his long career, notably as a co-president of the Canadian Coalition for Cultural Diversity, and as president of the Association of Canadian Publishers. He received an honourary Doctor of Laws degree from Simon Fraser University and was awarded the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Medal. He is a member of the Order of Canada.

Richard Mollet

Richard Mollet became chief executive of the Publishers Association in October 2010. Prior to this he was director of Public Affairs at the BPI (the representative body of the UK recorded music business) where he was closely involved in the Digital Economy Act, the Gowers Review of Intellectual Property, and the wider debates around the value of copyright and the creative industries. Before joining the BPI, Richard had ten years’ experience as a political communications consultant, working across a range of political and media sectors.

He studied PPE (Philosophy, Politics, and Economics) at Worcester College, Oxford University. Richard is a visiting lecturer for the Hansard Scholars Programme at the London School of Economics.

Richard Prieur

Richard Prieur has worked in public relations for over thirty years as broadcaster and spokesperson for a number of organizations and public events. Vice-president, Communications for the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix (1990–2005) and president of Cité Communications, the company responsible for publications and televising the Canadian Grand Prix and various other events, he was associate editor at Éditions Gesca and Éditions La Presse from 2005 to 2009.

A graduate of the Université du Québec à Montréal (literature), he has worked as bookseller, public relations officer for the Théâtre du Nouveau Monde and most recently as vice-president, communications, responsible for televising the 2005 FINA World Aquatics Championships in Montreal. He sits on the board of directors of the Société de la Banque de titres de langue française (BTLF, Bank of French Language Titles) and is executive director of Québec Édition, an ANEL committee providing promotional services to Quebec and Canadian French-language publishers abroad.

Rosalind Ramsay

Rosalind Ramsay began scouting in 1996 and, together with her team, looks after publishers from around the world as well as a major UK film and television company. Focusing on the UK market, she recommends the right books to her clients so that they may acquire translation or film rights early and with support. Her background is in agenting with Andrew Nurnberg Associates and with Rogers, Coleridge & White, where she sold translation rights for both UK and US agencies in a wide variety of language territories.

Nicole Saint-Jean

Nicole Saint-Jean is president and executive director of Guy Saint-Jean Éditeur, a family publishing company celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. Guy Saint-Jean Éditeur has become a major player in Quebec publishing, known for non-fiction guides on food and health as well as for popular fiction for adults and teens. The internationally successful erotica series has been published in twenty-five countries.

A business graduate of the École des Hautes Études Commerciales, Nicole is also a lawyer. After working as an editor for a number of publishers, she joined Guy Saint-Jean Éditeur, the publishing house founded by her father. She worked in the editorial department and became head of the company following the death of her father in 2005. She is actively involved in the book industry: currently vice-president of the Association nationale des éditeurs de livres, she also serves on the board of directors of the Salon du livre de Montréal and works for several consulting firms contracted by the Quebec Department of Cultural Affairs.

Evan Schnittman

Evan Schnittman is managing director Group Sales and Marketing, Print and Digital, Bloomsbury Publishing Plc. He splits his time equally between Bloomsbury’s London and New York offices and is in charge of all sales, marketing, publicity, rights and technology across Bloomsbury’s group companies.

Evan spent eight years at Oxford University Press as vice president of corporate and business development. He was responsible for digital partnerships and licensing across OUP’s various content divisions. He has over twenty-five years of publishing related business experience having held positions as executive vice president at The Princeton Review, senior editor at Little, Brown, and editorial and sales positions at FA Davis. Evan started his publishing career at Barnes & Noble’s main store on 5th Avenue in Manhattan.

Evan is widely known in the industry as a thought leader—and is widely sought out to speak and write on the key issues facing content companies in a digital world. His blog, Black Plastic Glasses, has become required reading for anyone wishing to understand book publishing in the digital age.

Clare Somerville

Clare Somerville has worked in publishing for thirty years and has spent time with a number of the major UK publishing houses in a variety of senior sales and marketing roles. Having graduated from Bristol University she went on to pursue post graduate studies in business with languages at London City University, and entered publishing working as a copywriter for Penguin Books in 1980. She is a guest lecturer at Kingston University and is a member of the Reading Partners strategy group, a publishing/library industry consortium. Clare was the recipient of a highly commended Women in Publishing Innovation Award for her work on the Mills & Boon centenary.

Margie Wolfe

Margie Wolfe is president of the Association of Canadian Publishers (ACP), representing approximately 135 Canadian-owned and -controlled book publishers from across the country. The ACP membership is diverse, including companies of various sizes, and publishing adult and children’s literature for the trade, literary, and educational markets.

Margie is owner, publisher, and president of Second Story Press, which develops titles for both adult and younger readers. The niche list focuses on themes of social justice including women’s issues, diversity and the Holocaust. Titles have been released in over fifty countries and translated into more than forty languages with rights for film and stage also sold.
