Marie-Christine is writing her master’s thesis on Roland Barthes’ semiological analysis of a short story by Balzac. As a result of her research, she finds herself entangled in a web of obscurity with no apparent way out. Overworked, alone, unhappy, anxious, neurotic, and overwhelmed by existential vertigo, Marie-Christine witnesses her own gradual decline. “Madness is the first step to non-being. Fantasy is the only reality. I have become a madwoman trying to make sense of my madness,” she tells herself. She is constantly disturbed by visions and voices. In spite of this, she finds comfort, friendship and understanding among a small group of people on the fringes of society who “have visions of God. ” But she will be dragged along with them into a nightmarish scenario: a maelstrom of reality, false appearances, hallucinations, expanded consciousness, mythology and esotericism.

Marie-Christine fait une maîtrise en littérature qui porte sur un essai hermétique de Roland Barthes, une étude sémiologique consacrée à l'analyse d'une nouvelle de Balzac. Mais elle se perd dans les méandres d'une recherche absconse qui ne la mène apparemment nulle part. Surmenée, seule, malheureuse, inquiète, névrosée, prise d'un vertige existentiel, Marie-Christine se regarde sombrer peu à peu. « La folie est le début du non-être. Seul le fantasme est vrai. Je suis devenue une folle qui raisonne sa folie », estime-t-elle. Des visions, des voix sèment le trouble dans son esprit. Elle se sent entourée de danger, les autres deviennent ses ennemis, le mal est partout, les méchants envahissent le monde. Elle trouve néanmoins réconfort, amitié et compréhension auprès d'un petit groupe de marginaux « qui voient Dieu », mais elle va être entraînée avec eux dans un drame affreux, où se mêlent réalité et faux-semblants, hallucinations et psychédélisme, mythologie et ésotérisme. Un voyage aux confins de la folie et de la schizophrénie..
