Hetty van Gurp

Hetty van Gurp is a peace educator with a lifelong commitment to both teaching and justice. After 30 years as a teacher and administrator, Hetty founded Peaceful Schools International, an internationally recognized organization. In addition to her work in education, Hetty has also served as a member of the federal Human Rights Tribunal. Hetty’s contributions have been honoured with numerous awards, including the Canadian Teachers’ Federation Special Recognition Award for meritorious service to education and the Human Rights Award from the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission. Hetty was named a Canadian Hero by both Time magazine (2006) and Reader’s Digest (2007). Hetty holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from Mount Saint Vincent University, where she is also a part-time faculty member.
