Anderson Ruffin Abbott graduated from the University of Toronto School of Medicine in 1861, and became the first Canadian of African descent to train as a physician. Abraham Lincoln appointed him one of only eight black surgeons in the Union Army during the Civil War. He was Canada’s first African Canadian coroner. He was also superintendent of Chicago’s Provident Hospital and Training School. Widely published, Abbott championed the causes of others, particularly those of African descent.
