Our Values

Livres Canada Books respectfully acknowledges that our offices are located on the traditional, unceded and unsurrendered territories of the Anishinaabe Algonquin nation. As an organization, we are committed to being good guests on these lands and to entering into respectful and equitable relationships with Indigenous peoples in the space now known as Canada and around the world.

In all that we do, we aim to build positive relationships with national publishers and industry stakeholders, as well as with our international counterparts and partners.

These relationships reflect our core values:

  • We believe that Canadian books are a distinctive, valuable, and important export for Canada, and should be shared with the world.
  • Everything we do is committed to providing unique, experienced, and excellent support for the export of Canadian books, and to the publishing industry at large.
  • We believe in continually working with international partners to identify new markets and find new ways to promote Canadian publishers and their books around the world.
  • We respect equity and diversity by listening to our stakeholders, involving our directors and partners in our decision-making, and by being fair and impartial in every activity we undertake.

Accessibility

Livres Canada Books aims to create an accessible, diverse, and inclusive environment. As such, we have committed to improving accessibility across the organization’s programs and services by 2025.

One of the biggest steps we have recently taken towards this goal is the redesign of our website to ensure compliance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 AA. standard. This is one of the ways in which we are addressing equity and ensuring that publishers and book lovers with disabilities can rely on accessible digital resources.

Accessibility is an ever-evolving field, and we continue to learn and implement inclusive best practices. For more information about accessibility at Livres Canada Books or to request specific accommodations, please contact us by email at info@livrescanadabooks.com.

Diversity and Inclusion

Livres Canada Books is committed to upholding a culture of respect for all. We seek to foster a diverse and inclusive environment, which is essential for the wellbeing of our staff, secretariat, and clients, and for the fulfilment of our mandate in a way that reflects the experiences of all Canadians.

We are mindful of diversity in our governance structure and committed to ensuring that our board of directors reflects the diversity of the industry. We strive to actively seek out, recruit, and support individuals from marginalized and underrepresented groups, including people of a variety of racial and ethnic backgrounds, genders, sexual orientations, abilities, neurotypes, ages, and geographic, linguistic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. We do not tolerate any discrimination on the basis of the foregoing identities in our hiring practices, in our workplace, or in any of our interactions with outside individuals and entities.

It is vital that the diversity of the publishing industry in Canada—of readers, authors, illustrators, editors, publishing houses, and everyone whom literature touches—is accurately represented and respected in an equitable way in all our work. This is an ever-evolving process that requires continuous re-evaluation and improvement, and we welcome feedback on our practices and policies from our staff and the communities we serve.

We believe that books play a vital role in the creation of a more equitable, understanding, and empathetic society, and it is our responsibility to be a part of the change.
