Description

“Deeply informative and readable… By making an important Alberta story available, AU Press has performed an essential cultural service for all Canadians. ”—Literary Review of Canada

This is the story of the repatriation of 251 ceremonial items from the Glenbow Museum’s collection—efforts, above all, of the Blackfoot themselves, but also of museum staff who attempted to intercede with the provincial government. Included are the accounts of the Piikani, Siksika, and Kainai elders who were intimately involved in this work, along with the contrasting accounts of the events that led to the drafting of Alberta’s ground-breaking First Nations Sacred Ceremonial Objects Repatriation Act. These accounts are framed by Conaty’s own reflections on the impact of museums on First Nations, on the history and culture of the Blackfoot, and on the path forward.
